In metal-clad switchgears partial discharges can occur either in bus-bar section, HT cable section or in circuit breaker chamber. Partial discharges are symptomatic to destructive faults & deterioration of electrical insulations. These Partial Discharges are associated with Arcing, Corona & Tracking in the electrical insulation system.
Ultrasonic testing is often used at voltages exceeding 1,000 volts (Corona and other activities are usually seen in voltages above 1,000V), especially in enclosed switchgear. Since ultrasound emissions can be detected by scanning around door seams and air vents, it is possible to detect serious faults such as arcing, tracking and corona without taking the switchgear off line.
Our Ultradetect instruments acoustically localize a defect source based upon the physical properties of partial discharge events.
