Transformer undergoes through various stresses such as electrical, mechanical, thermal & chemical during its service. Such stresses affect the performance of transformer insulation system and develop localized defects in the insulation system. Partial discharge is one of the major reasons of creating such defects. Early identification of partial discharge in transformer can help in assessing the type and level of defect the insulation is suffering from.
The detection of partial discharge activity can be done either periodically or through continuous monitoring.
